Thyroid Treatment

It is not uncommon for us to see patients who have been told that their thyroid function is “normal” yet they have many of the symptoms commonly associated with low thyroid function. Both of our doctors utilize comprehensive thyroid tests in combination with a a thorough medial history and physical exam to determine who may be candidates for treatment for hypothyroidism or Hashimoto's disease.

Thyroid Testing:
Depending upon a patient's symptoms we may utilize any combination of the following tests:

       TSH, Free T3, Free T4, Thyroid antibodies, and reverse T3

Thyroid treatments:
We utilize a variety of treatments both supplements and prescribed thyroid hormones. For most patients who are struggling, using thyroid hormones tends to work the best. We treat using natural thyroid such Armour Thyroid and Nature-Throid and are open to using  Synthroid (Levothyroxine) as well as Liothyronine (T3). Most patients do well with natural thyroid medications, so this is what we most often prescribe. There are however patients who do better on Levothyroxine (T4) or a combination of Levothyroxine and Liothyronine (T3). The bottom line is we are all different and we need to cater to the individual's needs.

Adrenal Support:
As for the adrenal glands, we do offer testing for adrenal function. It is often good to address low adrenal function along with hypothyroidism. Keep in mind however that hypothyroidism can lead to adrenal fatigue and sometimes by correcting the underlying thyroid problem, you can help restore the adrenal function with little intervention.
